Vitosha Boulevard

Vitosha Boulevard, better known as Vitosha, is the main road artery in the center of Sofia.

The Boulevard starts from Sveta Nedelya square, passes through the ideal center of Sofia, crosses the one-way boulevard "Patriarch Evtimii", continues along the western side of the park of the National Palace of Culture, intersects with Bulgaria Blvd.; zh. k. "Ivan Vazov" and ends at the South Park at the crossing with "Byala Cherkva" Str.

Bul. Vitosha is popular with its many shops and boutiques. According to a 2005 Kushman and Wakefield study, Vitosha is the 22nd most expensive shopping street in the world. In the same survey for 2012 and 2013, Vitosha Blvd is 59th.

In the section between "Alabin" and "Patriarh Evtimii" Blvd., the boulevard is a pedestrian zone, forbidden for vehicles, only crossing through the perpendicular streets of Vitosha. On September 28, 2006, municipal councilors decided to partially open Vitoshka for owners of commercial premises and living in the area. The tram continues on the boulevard even when the street has been closed to other vehicles.

Tram traffic on the pedestrian area of the boulevard is stopped, as the route of the Second Metro Diameter of the Sofia Metro passes below this section.

For a short while in the early twentieth century, the boulevard is called General Gurko, a name that today carries another Sofia street.
